The first film to give African gay men a voice, this fascinating documentary follows an emerging community as they demand and take power to construct a distinctly African Queer sexuality. The ‘woubi’ of the title is a male who chooses to play the role of a ‘wife’. The ‘yossi’ takes the role of ‘husband’, and could, in a society where polygamy remains common, identify as gay, straight, bisexual or be already married. Revealing the lives of disparate characters, Woubi Cheri reminds us of the diversity of a continent where not every country has laws proscribing gay sex and, emboldened by developments in the US and Europe, LGBT people are becoming increasingly strident.
